About the Office of Housing and Construction Standards
Our responsibilities cover a broad range of regulatory and policy areas related to housing in British Columbia that include:
- Governance of the building and safety standards regulatory system for the design, construction and occupancy of buildings in British Columbia.
- Development and application of the BC Building and Fire Safety Codes.
- Promoting British Columbia's interests in national building and fire code standards while working with stakeholders to balance safety, economic and social priorities.
- Managing administrative agreements with delegated authorities under the Safety Standards Act.
- Secretariat to the Building Code Appeal Board, B.C.'s building code dispute resolution board and the Safety Standards Appeal Board;
- Working with the Homeowner Protection Office to strengthen consumer protection for buyers of new homes;
- Povincial housing policy development, strategies and programs, including market and non-market housing, homelessness, Aboriginal off-reserve housing and housing for persons with special needs.
- Policy development and stewardship of the Strata Property Act and regulations.
- Provide landlords and tenants with information and dispute resolution services through the Residential Tenancy Branch.
