Municipal Affordable Housing Plans
Local governments have the responsibility to develop regional strategies and official community plans that will accommodate expected growth in their communities. The Local Government Act of British Columbia requires Official Community Plans to include housing policies “respecting affordable housing, rental housing and special needs housing”. Local government websites can be checked for their plans for affordable housing.
A number of local governments have also developed successful affordable housing plans. For example:
City of Langford Affordable Housing Program requires developers of new subdivisions within the City to build one affordable home for every 10 single-family lots subdivided. The City also gave a presentation at the UBCM 2011 Affordable Housing Workshop.
City of Surrey is developing a Housing Action Plan. The City also presented their housing plan at the UBCM 2011 Affordable Housing Workshop.
City of Vernon presented their housing plan at the UBCM 2011 Affordable Housing Workshop.
City of Victoria has a Community Plan that incorporates housing and land use
City of Vancouver has a comprehensive site on affordable housing with an emphasis on non-market social housing.
City of Abbotsford has drafted an Affordable Housing Strategy through public consultations.
